The Route
Harare to Bulawayo is approximately 440km one way via the A5 highway — Zimbabwe’s most-travelled intercity route. For most groups, it is a 5 to 6 hour drive depending on stops.
It is also the most common long-distance bus hire request we receive.
Wet Hire, Every Time
Every Chigutiro hire runs on our own 48-seater fleet, and it is wet hire — the bus, driver, and all fuel are included in your quote. Fuel costs on an 880km round trip are significant and unpredictable — fuel prices in Zimbabwe can shift week to week. Wet hire locks your total cost at the time of booking. No surprises on the day.
You pay the quoted amount. That is it.
What Does It Cost?
Our rate is $280 per day, plus $1.30/km. For Harare to Bulawayo, that works out roughly as follows:
- Same-day return trip (round trip, ~880km total): $280 + (880 × $1.30) = around $1,424
- One-way trip (bus does not wait): billed distance includes the driver’s return to base, so the km charge is the same as a return trip even though your group only travels one way
Add $280 for every extra day the bus and driver need to wait with you — for example, if your group is staying in Bulawayo overnight before heading back.

Mind the Night Driving Policy
Chigutiro does not permit travel between sunset and sunrise (roughly 18:00–06:00), for safety, with no exceptions. A 5 to 6 hour drive each way means a same-day return with a late-afternoon event can easily run into this — plan your departure and return times with real daylight margin, or budget for an overnight stop. Per-Person Cost Breakdown
To put it in perspective: on a full 48-seat bus, a $1,424 same-day return trip works out to roughly $30 per person. For a church or school group, splitting that across the full bus is straightforward, and everyone travels together — no coordinating separate cars or kombis, no one left behind.
Group travel gets more cost-effective the closer you are to filling all 48 seats.
