The Route
Harare to Bulawayo is approximately 440km one way via the A5 highway — Zimbabwe’s most-travelled intercity route. For most groups, it is a 5 to 6 hour drive depending on stops.
It is also the most common long-distance bus hire request we receive.
Wet Hire Is the Standard for This Route
For a 440km route, wet hire is the right choice for most groups. Fuel costs on a 72-seater bus for a Harare–Bulawayo return trip are significant and unpredictable — fuel prices in Zimbabwe can shift week to week. Wet hire locks your total cost at the time of booking. No surprises on the day.
With wet hire, your quote includes the bus, driver, and all fuel for the agreed route. You pay the quoted amount. That is it.
What Does It Cost?
Bus hire from Harare to Bulawayo starts from approximately $550 to $700 for a one-way wet hire trip, depending on:
- Bus size — 48-seater vs 65-seater vs 72-seater
- Return trip or one-way — return trips are priced differently from two separate one-way hires
- Dates — peak periods (school holidays, December, Easter) carry higher demand and prices reflect that
- Any additional stops — if your route deviates from the direct A5 highway, this affects the fuel calculation
The best way to get an accurate figure for your specific trip is to use the rate calculator on chigutiro.co.zw or WhatsApp us your details directly.
Per-Person Cost Breakdown
To put it in perspective:
On a 72-seater bus at $600 for the one-way trip, the cost per person is $8.33 if you fill the bus. For a church or school group of 60 people, that is roughly $10 per person — significantly cheaper than kombis or individual car arrangements for a group that size, and with the added benefit of everyone travelling together.
Group travel economics work in your favour once you get above 30 people.
How Dry Hire Works for This Route
Dry hire on a Harare–Bulawayo route means you pay for the bus and driver but cover fuel yourself. This is less common for this route because:
- You would need to budget for approximately 880km of fuel on a return trip
- Fuel prices at time of travel are unknown at time of booking
- Coordinating refuelling on the road adds complexity
Dry hire makes more sense for shorter, local routes where the fuel cost is small and predictable. For Harare to Bulawayo, wet hire is almost always simpler.
